Upma is one of the simplest and quickest form of breakfast or teatime dish . They are healthy dish popular mostly in Karnataka region. Upma usually can be prepared with Sooji( Rawalpindi or semolina), bread or oats. Here comes a simple but yummiest version which can be prepared easily and so quickly.
- Rawa/Sooji/Semolina: 2 cup
- Onion: 1
- Green chilly: 2
- Ginger: 1 inch
- Garam masala powder: 3/4 tsp
- Asafoetida: 1/4 tsp
- Fenugreek seed: 1/2 tsp
- Mustard seeds: 1 tsp
- Chana dal: 1 tsp
- Dry red chilly: 2
- Oil: 2 tbs
- Curry leaves: 3-4 strings
- Salt: to taste
- Water: 4 cups
- Grated coconut: 1-2 tbs(garnishing)
METHOD OF PREPARATION
- Roast rawa for 5-10 minutes or till it turns to light golden color. Here I used wheat rawa for preparing upma.
- Allow water to boil in a pan.
- Take another pan and boil oil in it.
- Sputter mustard seeds and fenu Greek seeds in it.
- Now add chana dal and roast for 1-2 minutes. Then add dry red chilly and saute for a while.
- Now add ginger , green chilly and curry leaves and saute for 2 minutes.
- Now add onion and saute till it turns soft.
- Add in masala powder to it.
- We can also use vegetables like cooked green peas, carrot to it if we loved. If you are adding , add it now.
- Now add boiling water and salt to it.
- Allow the water to boil completely.
- Now add roasted rawa or sooji little by little by stirring to avoid lump formation.
- Keep stirring till it thickens and about to done.
- Now close the lid cook for 1-2 minutes.
- Open and stir well. Also add grated coconut and fold well to get mixed.
- Remove from flame and serve hot with a cup of tea or coffee.
Delicious Sooji or semolina upma in yummy Karnataka flavour is ready . Serve hot.
